Fear: The Big Inhibitor of Innovation and Transformation

Momentum is growing in the corporate world — more and more companies are realizing that the convergence of advancing technologies will fundamentally change how we live and how we work.

This realization has led some leaders to initiate either a digital transformation or the building of an innovation system. In many cases, the ultimate objective is to “win” — beat the competition by increasing the speed and quality of human learning in order to attain the highest levels of human cognitive and emotional performance in concert with advancing technologies.

Questions that are commonly asked include: Where do we start? How do we structure the initiative? Is the initiative company-wide or siloed? Who leads the initiative? What technology do we need? What skills are we lacking? What is our competition doing? How will we train our employees for new roles as these technologies are implemented?

Questions that are rarely asked happen to be as important: How do we handle the human, emotional part of the transformation? How do we lead in a way so that our employees will emotionally embrace the new learning and ways of working that need to occur? How do we minimize one of the biggest human inhibitors to transformation: fear?

TRANSFORMATION STARTS AT THE TOP

An organization can’t transform unless its people transform. And its people won’t transform unless their managers and leaders transform. Leaders and managers must role model the new desired mindsets and behaviors that are necessary to successfully accomplish the transformation.

We all know that change is hard — especially in successful companies. People can become complacent in doing what they already do, especially if it has worked well in the past. But the old corporate axiom “If it’s not broken, don’t fix it” no longer applies in an environment of fast-paced technological change. Successful organizations today have to be constantly proactive, not reactive and defensive.

Transformation requires the mitigation of fear. Mitigating the fear of failing, the fear of not knowing what to do, the fear of learning new skills, and the fear of losing one’s position or job. Change can be scary for employees — especially for employees who do not have the skills needed for the new way of working, and especially for employees who do not have significant financial reserves to fall back upon if they find themselves needing to change jobs. People cannot learn when they are fearful.

What has surprised us in our transformation work is that leaders and managers can be just as fearful of the transformative change as employees. For managers and executives, the fear can be a fear of losing what they now have (power, status, responsibilities) or the anxiety about whether they have the abilities to do what will be necessary in order to lead in this new era. We have seen leaders sink underneath conference tables when it was suggested that they do a transformative pilot program. The fear of not knowing can be big.

Managers and leaders can deal with these fears many different ways. Reflexive responses can be:
  • The “corporate grin and nodding yes” with the internal talk being “no way”
  • Doing the minimal necessary to buy into the change or transformation initiative, hoping to make it to stock option vesting or retirement doing what one has done before
  • Delegating responsibility for the change initiative to a group, creating distance — not having direct responsibility for the initiative so failure is not attributed to them
  • Half-heartedly undertaking the transformation, believing this initiative — like many in the past — will blow over

We have seen all of these attitudes in the last few years inside very successful companies that have embarked on a major transformation initiative. How does a leadership team get to the place where they can admit their individual fears and find ways to support each other in acknowledging and working through those fears? How does a leadership team create a work environment that makes it easier for employees to deal with their fears? An answer to these questions begins with “the why.”

THE WHY

The first part of mitigating fear is having a reason to embrace the fear — a story that each employee can identify with in answering the question: Why should I change? That story is a story of why the organization must change and a story of why each individual needs to learn new ways of working to enable that organizational change. Employees need to make meaning personally of the Why in ways that that make sense to them. That “making sense” must emotionally connect with the individual.

Often, we need to help people find the “WIFM” — the what’s in it for me? Will it help me stay relevant? Will it help my career? Will it help me a better person or more successful in my life? We don’t usually know what will resonate, but ultimately the motivation needs to come from an intrinsic place. 

Conversations with employees individually and/or in small teams are necessary. The company story and the common individual whys must be continuously discussed and referred to for a long period of time until the new way of working becomes a habit. And the new way of working requires people to embrace their fears and to have the courage to go forward. Change is hard. Helping people buy in to change takes time and effort by leaders and managers.

If people buy in to the Why then they can move to the How. What mindsets and behaviors will be needed to accomplish the transformation? What kind of work environment is needed to enable those new mindsets and behaviors — both culturally and process-wise?

THE HOW

With respect to mitigating fear, culturally the leadership needs to create a “psychologically safe workplace” following the research of Professor Amy Edmondson of Harvard Business School. A psychologically safe workplace is one where people agree to do no harm to each other and to act civilly at all times. It is a place where everyone can speak up, be candid and have difficult conversations without the fear of — or actual — punishment or retribution.

It is a place where it is safe to challenge the status quo, to challenge each other’s thinking, to challenge higher-ups’ thinking and decisions, to admit one’s mistakes, and to say I don’t know. A safe workplace should mitigate corporate politics and internal competition, and it should enable collaboration, teamwork and learning. In order for that to happen, leaders and managers need to empower people and ensure their safety. Leaders need to show their own weaknesses; they need to fail in front of others and pick themselves back up and try again. Initiatives and trials need to be rewarded, not only the successes, but the effort and spirit. At some point this becomes the norm.

CONQUERING FEAR

Everyone is fearful — individual differences are a matter of degree. And what differs is how one manages his or her fears. Behaviorally, how do leaders enable workers to overcome their fears? How do leaders learn to personally embrace and deal with their own fears? Leaders need to become more human by acknowledging their fears publicly to others and encouraging their direct reports to do the same. Having nonjudgmental, respectful, caring, compassionate, safe conversations about fear starts at the top. Leaders have to take the first steps in being vulnerable with others and leaders need to have the conversations with others that result in the co-creation of the rules of engagement that can lead to creating an environment where it is psychologically safe for employees to talk about and work through their fears of change.

We have learned that for many leaders it is much easier to start the fear discussion by asking them a series of questions: “Why would your employees be fearful of the change that is needed? What can you do to mitigate that fear?” Then move to the personal discussion. “What about you — what fears do you have about the transformation? How can you mitigate your fear?” Transformation is very personal, and though we read studies and survey outcomes, we very infrequently hear about reasons for the fears. 

Acknowledging that everyone has personal reasons for their fears is a powerful step. Then managers and leaders can have conversations with small groups of employees and ask them what they need from the company in order not to be so fearful and to be courageous. Leaders and managers can ask employees: “How can I help you feel safe here? What do I need to do differently?”
We are not saying you should lower your standards of performance. What we are saying is that if you want big changes in human behaviors, you need to face fear in the workplace courageously, both individually and organizationally.

As Abraham Maslow so aptly stated: “An individual engages in learning to the extent he (or she) is not crippled by fear and to the extent he (or she) feels safe enough to dare.”

Learning Environments as Studios for Integrated Design Education

In 1966, I took a walk on a sunny beach in Mexico with 12 children. I saw these young scavengers save shells in their t-shirts and throw others away and realized they were making critical aesthetic judgments. They loved beauty! I was looking for a dissertation topic and these 12 shell collectors inspired me. Here is how.

Prototype Learning Environment for Preschool

After a pilot study with 47 very dull, traditional classrooms in Arizona, 10 ASU architect students and I decided to design and build a prototype environment in the ASU College of Education. This was an experimental study using the developmental needs of 3-5-year-olds (Piaget) as design determinants for the ensuing environment. Programming also used concepts from subject matter disciplines imbedded into the learning environment. These were child scaled non-literal environments based on “soft pastel, soft textured, subdued sound”, “a geometric play area” and a “hard edged mirrored environment and sand and water play.”  There was a space frame table, lowerable into the central open space on a block and tackle pulley system (physics). Though stable in the experimental setting, the architecture students envisioned these modules as a series of portable environments that could be installed anywhere.

Research Results of an Experimental Setting

Except for a few dolls and trucks, all manipulatives were part of an architectonic multi-sensory embodied cognition organizing system. The locus of imagination was in the students’ “mind” with multi-sensory interaction of manipulatives. There was a control group in a traditional early childhood classroom in the College of Home Economics and we measured the same outcomes in both the experimental and control groups. The point of this experimental study was that the architecture students used design, curricular, and developmental needs (rights) of 3-5-year-olds as design determinants for each environment so that the environment became a teaching-learning manifestation of what was to be learned. Students and their instructors could turn “things into thoughts or ideas”.

Results from this study and a replication study with non-English speaking students revealed that the experimental environment showed increases in student language acquisition, accelerated movement from parallel to integrated play, advanced concept development, and creativity as measured by a scored portfolio assessment instrument.

Monte Vista-remodel of Two Old Classrooms
Ensuing research occurred with George Vlastos in two adjoining gutted classrooms at Monte Vista school in Albuquerque. The space outside had lain fallow for 50 years. A new landscape (including a solar greenhouse) and an outdoor deck were built. Students were more independent and teachers spent long hours after school writing individual lesson plans for students in a communication area (writing and literacy); science and math area; mirrored area for perception of self, theatrical makeup and costumes, drawing; sewing and weaving area; library and quiet zone; a weather station; coat storage area; deck to the outside. The green house was a student magnet for plant growth (botany) who nourished life outside of themselves. Nearly 17 years later, I received a call from one former kindergarten student, now in college, who was writing a paper on her unique experience in that early learning environment and how much it affected her life and learning.

Head Start Classroom of the Future
The Taylor-Vlastos Head Start classroom prototype combined “zones” with deployability. The values-driven design of portable environments was based on a fulcrum with a series of columns delivering electricity overhead through arched pipes. (Wireless technology could change the delivery system.) Foldout tables, which were nested, lowered out of trylon columns that could be rotated 359 degrees, transforming into deployable learning zones. A space frame “soft nest” was in the center from which all things emanated and returned. (This was compatible with the Isleta Native American pueblo of “plaza” where the experiment took place.) Students interacted with an induction cooktop, design studio with drop down light tables (a favorite), a media center with computers, headphones, and a DVD player, a mirrored zone for drawing, and creative dramatics. There was a building system and construction zone and one for growing plants. The contemporary and functional feeling of the environment interested children more than literal housekeeping corners in Head Start classrooms.

The Programming Process
The learning environments consulting expanded and involved students. Students in Stockton said, “Why are you designing us a new high school? We already have one with swimming pool, soccer and football field, fine arts center and more.” “Well,” we said, “what is it you want?” “We want a farm and an environmental study center on the San Joaquin Delta!”

The Taylor-Vlastos programming process, a grass-roots approach, a democratization of architecture, involves the philosophy of Ecosophy posited by Arne Næss from Norway. In the past, many educators as clients wrote predetermined programs for architects, with so many “teaching stations” leading to a double loaded corridor and predetermined square footage for traditional spaces. My method of programming spaces, turns Health and Safety (body), Functionality (mind), and Psychological and Aesthetic Satisfaction into Habitability sustainability. Though newer schools seem to be more colorful with wider hallways, newer furniture, the delivery system is basically still teacher centered.
 
Embodied Cognition Fostered by Design Education
Lately, my colleagues and I from School Zone Institute as well as the American Institute of Architects Albuquerque have been working in schools with volunteer architects that teach Architecture and Design to students K-5. 

There are studies that affirm the influence of kinesthetic exploration on embodied cognition.  Researchers found by adding kinesthetic experiences to visual and auditory impressions the quality of visual communication improved. This kind of embodied cognition is fostered by design education including drawings, models, and site analysis. Design education demands an environment and curriculum that motivates students to move around, use their large and fine motor skills. Design is the nexus for the integrated study of Science, Technology, Engineering Art/Architecture, Math (STEAM). 

The Classroom as a Studio
New models of integrated learning through design need studios connected to an adjacent “maker” lab. Everything in the studio should be on wheels. There is a supply depot in the center of the studio with printers, 3-D printers, paper cutters, pens, pencils, and more.  There is natural lighting from windows, known to increase learning. (Some teachers draw the blinds and use them for bulletin boards all year long.) If windows are placed east-west, students can track the sun on windows from season to season. There is no need for blinds. There are windows that can dim and open to the light automatically. There are drop down tables on one wall. Another wall is writable for solving math problems, drawing inventive concepts. Another wall is for pin up and presentation. Nearby stackable stools turn a presentation wall into a critique gallery. HVAC is exposed in the ceiling. The facilitator’s desk is a small station on wheels with a computer. Light tables are everywhere. There is a courtyard with a sink and a small garden for practicing landscape design by students. This is a child-centered studio where students are given power to do their own learning through design. This teacher, with goals for each child, is the monitor and facilitator of growth in traditional subjects plus Body, Mind, and Creative Spirit. This new studio gives power to children to do their own learning.

Top 10 Emerging Technologies in Construction

For many construction professionals, the future is now. Technology offers myriad tools that the building industry was told would be available “someday.” That “now” is redefining processes, deliverables, accuracy, and communication. The best news is that education leaders are the recipients of those emerging benefits. Here are 10 technologies that will serve school districts that are renovating, repurposing, or starting new construction projects.

1. Virtual Reality
If you have ever completed a project and were unhappy with the results, help has arrived. Virtual reality bridges the visual gap and allows you to experience the space by “walking” into your design, observing materials, lighting, volume of space, and more. You can position objects in the space to sense what they will be like in reality. You’ll be able to see specific details, for example,
• What is the line of sight from the front office?
• Will students and guests find their way easily because the flow naturally makes sense?
• Does the anticipated arrangement of the room work for the number of students in the class?
But the possibilities don’t end there.

2. Augmented Reality
Not long ago, the only way architects and construction professionals could see their plans was on paper or in computer simulations. Now, those in the building industry and their clients can strap on a pair of hi-tech goggles containing sophisticated software and experience a holographic, interactive view of their concepts and layouts. This augmented reality (AR) — sometimes called mixed reality — combines vision with the real world, providing an accurate view of what the future could be. As thoughts, plans, and designs emerge and progress, districts and their architectural teams can see the designs come to life — virtually — and change the plans in mere minutes.
With AR you can overlay a digital model with real-world information. You can see where a duct or wall is supposed to be installed while “walking” the construction site. You can envision an entire building from various positions on the property, comparing angles and views. Virtual and augmented reality take the mystery out of the planning process, allowing stakeholders to see and understand what is possible, reducing frustration and rework, and ultimately creating better, more functional buildings.

3. Drones
Drones, quadcopters, and other unmanned aerial systems are no longer just expensive toys. The construction industry uses them in a variety of ways to produce timely information and useful “drone’s-eye views.” They’re being used to survey progress, to review site logistics and staging, and even to conduct quick safety audits. Additionally, it is now possible to inspect remote or difficult-to-reach areas like rooftop equipment, as well as to conduct digital surveys using special attachments like sensors, lasers, or scanners.

With their ability to be quickly mobilized, to examine the perimeter of the job site, to identify the placement of equipment and vehicles, and to check on individuals, drones provide the additional data for surveillance and better decisions. They also improve employee safety and job site security.

4. Project Management and Communication Software
Current software now digitizes processes like estimating and bidding, while also facilitating communication among stakeholders. Using the latest digital tools reduces the risk of errors that can result in expensive and time-consuming backtracking during construction.

Software enables teams to collaborate in real time on files, task lists, schedules, notes, images, and drawings. Such apps and software suites allow supervisors, clients, and managers to chat, view personnel availability, stream video or web conferences, or even take control of another person’s computer to collaborate and maintain mutually agreed-on details.

Some examples of common apps and software products are Microsoft Teams, Slack, Procore, Viewpoint Vista, and Skype for Business. Many of these project management software products are cloud based, allowing anytime, anyplace access to project information by the design and construction team, as well as by the client — using a computer, tablet, or smartphone. Greater transparency, via software, can often reduce friction and misunderstandings throughout the construction process.

5. Three-Dimensional Printing and Prefabrication
Uses for 3-D printing within the construction industry are growing every day. These systems can provide small-scale models for presentation and review, as well as entire parts for project installation. Three-dimensional printing of entire buildings is even being attempted through a concrete extrusion process.

Prefabrication allows for more precise installation of elements, which can be formed in large, integrated, and coordinated portions. These 3-D elements can be placed precisely using “total stations” — highly accurate GPS or laser positioning. The benefits include improved accuracy, reduced waste, increased safety, and less manpower.

6. Facilities Management Software
Enhanced software allows districts to use building information modeling (BIM) to track warranties, maintenance items, system use, security, room assignments, and more. This information helps districts stay on top of their largest assets and significant expense points. And now, the instant accessibility via mobile devices allows the maintenance department to make more timely and informed decisions.

7. Digital Plans and 3-D Content
Districts and construction personnel can access digital plans and 3-D content from the cloud through tablets and smartphones to gain real-time information for making decisions in the field.

When used properly, digital plans offer the following advantages during construction:
• The most current plans are always available.
• Updates are instantly shared, including construction bulletins, photos, addenda, and scope changes.
• District personnel, subcontractors, and suppliers can regularly access 3-D views in construction documents to communicate design intent, increasing communication effectiveness and proper delivery.
• Digital plans allow more use of color without expensive color printing. They can zoom in and out of objects and even digitally measure items or share comments on specific recommendations right on the plans.
• Digital plans display punch lists with items tagged for action directly on the plans.

8. QI Codes and Barcoded Items
Construction and project items may have QR codes or barcodes relating to an object ID in the BIM. Items are scanned as they are installed, which automatically updates the BIM to reflect progress. This capability allows more effective and efficient tracking during the construction project.

Moreover, the tracking can trigger additional purchases for the next stage of work for more effective scheduling. The tracking codes can also link to user manuals, warranty information, equipment invoices, and related historical correspondence.

9. Laser Scanning
Laser scanning captures an accurate representation of existing buildings and systems, which can then be modeled, or new objects “clashed” against for proper system coordination. This technology has a variety of uses and can allow the district to visualize existing conditions beyond the results of photos and taped measurements.

Perhaps the greatest benefit of laser scanning throughout the construction process is the ability to compare the installed progress with the digital model to evaluate accuracy, allowing for the adjustment of future prefabricated items before delivery and installation, while providing another accurate method of tracking the percentage of completion.

10. Automated Bricklaying
Automated installation of masonry significantly reduces labor cost. Some automated brick systems can lay 3,000 bricks a day, compared with a construction worker’s average of 500. With some systems, the conveyor belt, mortar pump, and robotic arm combine with a worker who feeds the bricks into the machine. A second worker smooths over any excess joint mortar.
As mason professionals retire, we can expect automated bricklaying to become more mainstream in a field that already sees a worker shortage.

Take the Next Steps
Becoming aware of technology’s effect on the construction industry can be a great first step as a district considers its next construction project. These 10 technologies will increasingly affect how that district plans, designs, constructs, and uses its buildings.

Help the Kids In Need Foundation Helps Those Who Need it Most



Across America students get up each weekday morning and head off to spend the next roughly 7 hours in school. For most of the country, this activity is in the background of their daily lives. They want kids to listen to their teachers, get good grades, and stay out of trouble. They pay their property taxes and grumble about budget hikes, and largely trust that what is happening in our schools is working out alright.

Yet for the millions of students living in poverty, this daily experience is anything but alright. Teachers know this when they spend an average of $500 from their own pocket each year on supplies for their rooms or when when they cease sending back-to-school supply lists over the summer because the families can’t afford to go shopping. Students know this when they can’t complete assignments at home because they don’t have pencils or when they rely on federal nutrition programs to fill their bellies and can’t fill their backpacks. The Kids In Need Foundation knows things aren’t alright, and has dedicated itself to helping to fill the need.

The mission of the Kids In Need Foundation (KINF) is to ensure that every child is prepared to learn and succeed in the classroom by providing free school supplies nationally to students most in need. According to the U. S. Department of Education, more than half of this country’s public school students are eligible for free or reduced-price lunch. It is these students, and their teachers, to whom Kids In Need Foundation offers free school supplies; the core tools for success in the classroom and in life.

Founded in 1995, the Kids In Need Foundation got its start in the school supplies and office products industry’s international trade association. With any number of challenges such as slow or sunsetting stock, logo changes or misprints, retailers and manufacturers in the trade association sought ways to lessen their impact. The founders of KINF realized that these truckloads of supplies should be put to better use. Both then and now, the core of KINF operations has been pairing businesses in need of inventory management solutions with teachers and schools who need new, quality supplies.

Enter the flagship program of KINF; the National Network of Resource Centers. Each Resource Center has a store front where teachers from qualifying schools can come to shop for free for their classroom. Each Center also has an associated warehouse that provides the logistical solution to receiving, storing, and distributing large-scale donations of inventory from all across the country. By inviting schools with high levels of need in their student body to shop, KINF provided a unique service in the industry and non-profit space both, allowing companies to directly support the community while also helping their bottom line.  

Between 1999 and 2019, Kids In Need Foundation has grown its Affiliate Network to 43 locations and is able to offer turn-key donation experiences to inventory donors nationwide. KINF has developed a seamless process that manages receipt of quantities from cartons to truckloads in critical time frames, often with only 72 hours’ notice. Many donors consider KINF an extension of their supply chain that comes with a four-star charity rating, a tax deductible donation, and the great feeling of seeing teachers and classrooms directly benefit.

The actual product that KINF receives can vary depending on seasonality, but the Foundation is careful to ensure only quality items end up available for teachers. The students who ultimately receive and use these donated materials deserve equity and a classroom experience just like any other’s. Supplies range from backpacks and core items, to classroom furniture and cleaning materials, books, arts and crafts, and more.

Each year, KINF surveys the teachers who use their services to ensure that their programs are delivering strong impact and that the supplies and support provided are aligned with classroom needs. This direct feedback guides the core product that KINF keeps stocked on the shelves of the Resource Centers and provides in other national programs. The number one requested item in 2017 was pencils, followed closely by dry erase markers, notebooks, and copy paper. These are items that get consumed as students engage in learning and need to be replenished frequently.

Over the years, as the number of Resource Centers has expanded, so too has the number of programs KINF offers to meet the diverse needs of students. School Ready Supplies program was established in 2004 as a way to provide supplies directly into the hands of students in locations that don’t yet have Resource Centers. Donors sign on to sponsor backpacks filled with core supplies and provide enough for a full school. This program has become a fast favorite with corporate donors because the filling and preparing of the backpacks makes a great team-building event. KINF will ship bulk supplies anywhere in the country, to trade shows or national conferences and more, and set up the volunteer experience that strengthens teams and cooperation. 

In 2013, Kids In Need formalized their response to natural disasters by creating their Second Responder® program. This program provides relief after disasters such as hurricanes or flooding, working directly with the schools to customize the supplies offered and to help students return to normalcy. In 2018, KINF relaunched their Classroom Supply Box program with SupplyAClassroom.org, its first online giving platform that allows donors to connect directly with classrooms in need of support. Donors can join forces to collectively fund one or several classrooms in districts across the United States.

In 2018, Kids In Need Foundation served nearly 200,000 teachers and more than 6 million students. Since its founding, KINF has distributed more than one billion dollars in school supplies. Until students and teachers no longer have the need, Kids In Need Foundation is dedicated to helping those who need it most. SOARing into Active Classrooms: A Case Study with an ADHD School

Deep in the hills of North Carolina, just outside of Asheville, is a high school called the Academy at SOAR. It is an adventure-based school that offers experiential learning to support high school students with ADHD and other behavioral challenges. I visited their campus recently to see how they were doing in their newly redesigned math classroom. This was their first year to offer standing workstations and active seating to their students, so I wanted to observe firsthand the impacts that active design may be having on student behavior and learning.

When I first arrived, Julie Lambert, the Dean of Academics, greeted me with a warm smile and contagious laugh. She exuded patience and warmth and was everything I would want in an administrator helping my child through a challenging stage of life. Julie proceeded to introduce me to a few of the teachers and show me around the refreshingly simple, calming, and charming school.

As I listened to the teachers’ experiences, I understood why they had an interest in creating active learning stations. The students at SOAR were there because they required special accommodations that a traditional classroom couldn’t provide. Before they implemented the active classroom, Julie said, “I’d have students who would need to do a little lap around the road and back because they just had to get this energy out somehow.” After introducing the active stations, Julie said, “They are finding ways to expel some energy while still being able to be present in class.”

I saw the evidence of this while I observed one of the classes. Students were standing, semi-sitting, rocking, pivoting, or fidgeting their way through the lesson. The girls, boys, and administrators I interviewed all said they experimented with different positions until they finally found something that worked for them.

According to one energetic male student, this helped him stop focusing on holding still so he could focus on the lesson. Another student I talked with, who had bright blue hair to match her bright personality, admitted that it was annoying to other students when she tapped her foot and couldn’t hold still, so using an active work space helped her fidget without distracting everyone else because the base of the stool was already rounded for rocking, and it has a rubber non-slip pad for safety and noise control.

I learned that the idea for creating active classrooms stemmed from Executive Director, John Willson’s, personal experience. He told me a story about his own son’s struggle with ADHD that began to be a problem in 2nd grade. They bought him a Move stool to take to his classroom, and John said the chair “made a world of difference for him...allowing him to move and stay in the moment and be successful.” When it came time to remodel the SOAR classroom, John didn’t hesitate to incorporate movement-minded workstations.

For many of us who are used to traditional classrooms, fidgeting and movement may seem counter intuitive. A common phrase from teachers is, “Sit still and pay attention.” The children who can do that are rewarded for sitting quietly at their desks and doing their lessons, while other children who can’t sit still have been unable to cope in a "normal" classroom setting. Ironically, they may get their only "allowable" exercise in their march to the principal's office.

My visit to SOAR inspired me to ask questions like, “What if our concept of normal is wrong?” “Is sitting still the best way for learning to take place?” “Could it be possible that the ones who cannot sit still are more normal and in touch with their learning needs than we give them credit for?”

Eric Jensen’s work in his book Teaching with the Brain in Mind, provides some answers to my questions. Jensen explains that traditional school settings have historically operated from the mindset of a “Sit and Get” learning style. However, he describes the part of the brain that regulates motor movements (cerebellum) as having over 40 million neurons, most of which are
outbound to memory, attention, and spatial perception. So, by activating the cerebellum, learning is triggered in the brain.

Jensen goes on to say that we now know “the relationship between movement and learning is so strong that it pervades all of life.” Likewise, John Ratey, author of the book Spark: the Revolutionary New Science of Exercise and the Brain , says, “Movement is like fertilizer for the brain.”

Inspired by words like these, all of us can consider how we might incorporate more active learning in our daily routines. And for the students at SOAR, we can catch a glimpse of how much more difficult it is for those students who have been diagnosed with ADHD to attempt to sit still while they are learning. It becomes clear that it is more counter intuitive to ask a child to sit still to learn.

However, despite this growing body of research, our schools and classrooms have yet to catch up. Aside from innovative schools like SOAR, it appears that we have been doing ADHD students, and all students for that matter, a disservice throughout their education by failing to link physical movement to the learning process.

While the relationship between movement and learning is strong, it’s hard to change the pattern of behavior of a whole culture addicted to sitting. Research published in the Annals of Internal Medicine in 2017 followed 8000 middle-aged and older adults in the United States for 4 years. They concluded that the average American is sedentary for 12.3 hours for every 16 waking hours in a day. It also found that those with the highest cumulative hours of sedentariness had higher incidences of all-cause mortality. (3)

Dr. James Levine of the Mayo Clinic suggests that there are over 30 chronic diseases attached to sedentary behavior. Unfortunately, this pattern of sedentary behavior begins early in life...in kindergarten where kids spend 6-8 hours per day sitting still. It appears that our schools have unwittingly become the training ground for sedentariness in adulthood.

During the several hours that I spent at SOAR, it became abundantly clear to me that all students — not just those with ADHD — could benefit from rethinking the layout and function of the classroom. As a kinesiologist, I cling to the research and suggest that we celebrate and encourage movement throughout the day. Now that we can prove how detrimental sitting still is to both health and learning outcomes, we can no longer expect our children to sit still and stop fidgeting in school. Instead, we are left with the task of teaching ourselves and our students that movement is good, vital to learning, and vital to a long, healthy life.

Children seem to know this innately, so I encourage parents, teachers, and administrators to get on board to celebrate  movement in the classroom and find ways to work with the student’s natural tendencies rather than trying to contain them. SOAR Academy is an example of how busy, moving, normal kids can peacefully coexist with, and even enhance, the learning process. Translating Your Profession to Students — 5 Tops to Becoming an Effective Educator

On July 31st, 2018 the Carl D. Perkins Career and Technical Education (CTE) Act was signed into law. If you are not an architect, or involved in STEM education, this may not have made headlines in your news feed. This important legislation, however, allows for over $1 billion in career and technical education grants for high school level architectural programs.

For educators, this means States will be allowed to use federal money to modernize their CTE curriculum to include architectural education and “encourage a more diverse workforce, fulfill the promise of design as the synthesis of art and science, and affect a fundamental change in educational curricula.”

The American Institute of Architects (AIA) K-12 Initiative supports the development of local architecture education programs by building relationships between chapters, members, allied members and educational partners. AIA is currently developing a digital repository that includes sample program guides and teaching tools, scholarships, and grant opportunities. These resources are invaluable in creating and maintaining a successful program.

The diversity and extent of resources from a national network of volunteers allows for anyone interested in starting an Architecture in Education (AIE) program the ability to start making connections with local schools almost immediately. There is a plethora of people willing to share learning experiences and lesson plans from their local programs. But let’s face it, if you have never stood in front of a room full of thirty rambunctious and curious students, you may be apprehensive about that first encounter. And that’s OK.

Nothing will be more important than creating a positive learning environment from the start. Children can be brutally honest. They are curious by nature and can be cavalier in their self-expressions. To an adult, the idea of a child telling you exactly what they think can be daunting. With a little preparation and confidence however, it is nothing to fear.

In the four years that I have been participating in the Architecture in Education program in Tampa, FL, at Lee Elementary, our biggest hurdle in preparing leaders for the eight week in-class program is convincing local architects that students will not be completely disinterested. I assure you that 9 times out of 10, students are excited to meet you and ready to listen.

If you are interested in or are considering launching an AIE program at any school, here are a few quick tips to establish a successful student-educator relationship from the start.

Tip No. 1
You are in control. This is your classroom, you lead the conversation and manage the flow of information. Take every opportunity to express your personal mastery of the topics at hand even if it means telling the whole room how badly you goofed on something before you learned how to do it correctly. Use your immediate surroundings as reference to make new or complex ideas relatable. You may be surprised how well your students relate and respond positively.

It is common for new educators to be nervous, questioning themselves ‘what if they ask me something I don’t know,’ or ‘what if they think I am a liar?’ Well, there is one simple way to answer both questions: tell the truth. If you don’t know the answer, tell them you will look it up and get back to them — and then deliver on that.

Tip No. 2
Don’t be afraid of shifting focus to enhance learning opportunities. You will not reach every student the same way — some students are good listeners, others require hands-on activities. It is easy to keep focus and attention by presenting actively. What I mean is:
  • Don’t stand still — move around the classroom and engage with the students at their desks.
  • Don’t just talk — ask questions about how the material at hand relates to their studies.
  • Exercise active listening — respond to comments directly and explore ideas that lead into the next part of the lesson.
  • Use your imagination to capture their attention. An idea can be expressed with a sketch, a physical property can be described with a demonstration, vocabulary words can be written down for reinforcement.
  • Ask for volunteers to help with demonstrations or passing out supplies for an exercise.

An object in motion tends to remain in motion, while an active mind tends to remain open and interested.

Tip No. 3
Know when to be serious and know when to have fun. When it comes to hands on learning activities, you need to set clear and definable goals that provide a measurable outcome. Competition is natural and healthy. Strive to provide an environment where achieving more is encouraged but not in a way that it becomes detrimental to achieving the learning objectives of the exercise or becoming devoid of imagination.

Keep the classroom teacher engaged by sharing lessons and presentations ahead of time. They will be your best resource in the classroom to help relate the information to the daily learning, as well as assisting in tailoring the presentation to the class. Lastly, they can be your biggest ally as a disciplinarian should the need arise.

Tip No. 4
That does not mean that you shouldn’t be having fun all the time. The only time a student will be less than interested in anything you have to say is if they feel no one is listening. Do yourself a favor and read the comics or watch a new cartoon. If you want to know how to make your material fun, ask students what they find entertaining and then do your research. Structure the next lesson to make it relatable. You do not have to deviate very far from reality to make fantasy worlds plausible, especially when communicating the importance and value of design.

Tip No. 5
Be a good sport. That means knowing how to act after crossing the finish line first, even if you have never been there before. You must only get over the first hurdle; then the momentum carries you through. No one starts out as an expert, being an effective educator is no different. It takes practice, patience and continual refinement in order to keep programs relevant.

Remember that a good attitude never goes out of style. Trust yourself, you got this.
